Valentine's Day

Who had introduced Valentine's Day (Feb.14) into Japan for the first time? It is said that the confectioner in Kobe had advertised the boxed chocolate as present for Valentine's Day in the English newspaper before World War II, early in the Showa period.
After the war, with the backdrop of growing feminism movement, the confectionaries began Valentine's Day sales campaign to sell the mass-produced chocolate to female shoppers by the slogan, " Ladies, confess love to your sweetheart by presenting chocolate to him."
Valentine's Day was originally the feast day of St. Valentine, one of Christian martyrs in the 3rd century. However this holiday traces its source to Lupercalia, the festival of fertility and fecundity, held on February 15th in ancient Rome.
This day began to be generally celebrated in Europe as lovers' holiday, when lovers and friends exchanged small tokens of affection on the very day. This custom crossed the Atlantic Ocean to the New World in the middle of the 19th century.
In the U.S. it is popular to exchange the greeting cards. The cards are often written with the phrase, "Be my valentine." Valentine stands for "sweetheart".
The cards are always sent along with flowers or candies, whose sales volume can be a big part of annual business in the U.S. as well as in Japan. National Confectionary Association (NCA) estimated almost $1.1 billion for Valentine's Day sales.
Besides chocolate and candy industry, other industries are looking for the same windfall to enter the Valentine's Day market. This year the American Dairy Association (ADA) started a new marketing challenge: "Cheese for a Valentine's Day treat".
ADA has the contest to find "America's Greatest Cheese Lover." Entrants must describe how cheese has brought romance into their lives, along with a copy of their heart-rending dairy recipe. The grand prizewinner will receive a three-day trip for two to Vermont's cheese country and a year's supply of cheese.
Many Americans love cheese and eat much more than the Japanese. That is a point. Certainly both cheese and chocolate are high caloric and nutritious, but cheese has a particular taste and fragrance to whet your sweetheart's passion. What is more, you can eat cheese with bread for breakfast, being free from anxiety about your teeth decayed. You remember the recent best-seller book, "Who moved my cheese?" If you propose cheese to your sweetheart, by saying, "I found it for you", he or she may show you a big smile.

Oyster Season Beneficial to Alzheimer's disease.

Fresh oysters of Chesapeake Bay are all the year round landed on the fish market at Waterfront a few miles south from the center of Washington D.C. Currently they are in season. Three dozens of oysters with shells sell at only 10 dollars. If you want, you can have them shucked there. Half a dozen on the half shell sell at 5 dollars. Try to suck up the raw oyster with a squeeze of lemon and a drop of chili sauce on it. Its rich flavor and smooth feeling of passing through your throat are superb! When you eat them in a city restaurant, the price will be double.
Chesapeake Bay was a great producer of oysters, whose share was almost 40% over the world in the decades following the Civil War, from the later 19th century to the early 20th century. The business of fishing and selling oysters brought a great fortune to many people, while conflicts among them over the fisheries escalated. It is called "Oyster Wars" in the U.S. history, where more than 7,000 people were totally killed.
Recently the Western people who eat raw fish have considerably increased. They originally didn't have the habit of eating raw fish, but oyster is another story. They had eaten raw oysters from B.C. They knew eating them raw is the most delicious way for oysters. The popular cooking methods of oysters are fry, soup, grill on the half shell, and smoke. The smoked oyster is seasoned with special sauce beforehand, which is an excellent delicacy.
The Westerners stick to oyster because they believe it can work for resilience and rejuvenation. Actually oyster contains many kinds of mineral including zinc, which can strengthen immune system of human body and prevent elders from losing their sense of taste. Recent study reported that L-tyrosine contained in oyster is beneficial to dementia including Alzheimer's disease.
Japanese people have eaten oysters since ancient times as well. They started to raise them in Hiroshima in the early Edo period. At that time "Oyster Boat" which sold oysters used to come to Yodo River in Osaka, crossing the Seto Inland Sea.
The most popular oyster dish in Japan is Kaki-no-Dote-nabe. Kaki is Japanese for oyster: Dote for riverbank: nabe for pot. We set up a large clay pot over a fire on the table, fill it with miso (soybean paste)-soup, put oysters, vegetable, tofu, and so on, then boil them. It is a kind of oyster chowder with miso taste.
There is one question. Why is it called "Dote (riverbank)"? The origin is uncertain. The most reasonable explanation is that when putting miso into a pot, they build up the bank of miso along inside wall of the pot. The alternative suggestions is that it was named from Mr. Dote, a peddler of Hiroshima and the originator of this recipe. Another suggestion is that it was first cooked in the oyster boat anchored in Yodo riverbank. I wonder which one is true.

Centenarian

The word "centenarian" has recently often appeared in the U.S media. Its origin is "cent" of "century", which means one hundred. The centenarian is a person who lives to 100 and over.
According to the U.S. Census of the year 2000, more than 50,000 centenarians were counted in America. On the other hand, Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced last September that centenarians in Japan had surpassed 15,000. Surprisingly, the ratio of centenarians to the whole population in the U.S. is 1.5 times as much as that in Japan. America seems to be speeding up into the aging society faster than Japan. The U.S. citizens who turn 100 years old can receive a birthday card from the U.S. President.
(According to the 2010 census, there are 53,364 centenarians in the United States, the greatest number in the world. Japan has the second-largest number of centenarians, with an estimated 51,376 as of September 2012)
How old at all might a man be able to live to be?
This question is very controversial among the scientists. Some say that a man can live to 125. Living to more than 100 is daily challenge to the physical and mental limits of human being.
Nowadays the scientists continue to pursue the secret of longevity in the fields of molecular biology and genetics.
There are many theories about the aging process; "the older you are, the more oxygen-bearing free-radicals are accumulated in your cells," "the aging is a secondary reaction of the process to prevent cancer."
No one has discovered the decisive cause of the aging. Therefore, it is the second good policy to "get older in the healthy condition." The World Health Organization (WHO) appreciated in 2000 that the Japanese live the most healthy and longest life.
Especially Okinawa prefecture is the center of the world attention, because many centenarians there still actively work and live in relatively healthy condition. Japanese and U.S researchers have studied together on Okinawa lifestyle for 25 years, and published the research book titled "The Okinawa Program" (Clarkson Potter/Publishers, New York). This book proposes four-week plan for health and longevity based on the traditional Okinawa food and physical exercises, which has created a world sensation.
Dupo, the famous Chinese poet of the Tang dynasty, wrote, "Life of 70 years has been rare since ancient times." 1200 years have passed since the age of 70 was recognized as a final destination of life, Koki. Now we have been extending the road of life, setting more milestones such as 77, Kiju; 88, Beiju; 99, Hakuji; 100, Hyakuga; 108, Chaju; and 111, Kouju.
In Japan the centenarian twin sisters, "Kin-san and Gin-san (Gold and Silver)" were very popular on TV. I wish to follow them to live long, but 80% of centenarians are women in fact. Only my wife might to be able to survive to be 100.
